The Department of Languages and Literature offers three programs: Language and Literature, Translation Studies and Liberal Arts.
Students enrolled in the Languages and Literature program study clusters of well-designed courses leading to the mastery of top-level skills integral to English Language and Literature. Students also study courses in criticism and Arabic Literature (in English translation or on a bilingual basis). Students must also study a second language on a mandatory basis (for example, French, German, or Korean) in addition to an Arabic language/syntax course.
Students who select the Translation Studies program study a variety of newly developed and non-traditional courses in written and oral translation, with a focus on courses that meet the requirements of the work-market. Translation Studies students study English language courses (syntax, rhetoric, writing etc.) and some English Literature courses as well as courses in Arabic language. Students must also study a third language other than English and Arabic (for example, French, German, or Korean).
Liberal Arts students study a variety of state-of-the art courses in drama, theater and film studies and other disciplines in addition to related courses in English Language and Literature, which reflect the current developments inherent in the UAE and Abu-Dhabi Visions and are integral to achieve the purposes of the CHSS/UAEU Strategic Plan.
